HISTORY

Wellspring Chiropractic and Acupuncture is here!  For 18 years, Dr. Jonathon Kunz has prided himself in providing the best chiropractic and acupuncture services the region has to offer.  No gimmicks, no long term or expensive treatment plans, just quality, affordable care that respects the patient by maximizing every visit.

His vision started in 2006 when he co-founded The Chiropractors at Four Hills, eventually becoming sole owner of the practice.  In the years following, Dr. Kunz grew a loyal patient base eager to refer friends and family to the clinic.  Existing customers feel compelled to refer their family, friends, and co-workers because they are respected as individuals and see great results from their care, leading to extremely high satisfaction rates.  Satisfied customers--those that feel listened to and well cared for--are happy to go out of their way to refer the people they know and love, confident they will receive the same level of care.

Together with his wife, Dr. Kunz began planning a joint business operation in 2018 that would include a chiropractic clinic and a salon studio concept all housed within one building.  In early 2021, this vision became reality and Sioux Falls saw the birth of two new businesses:  Wellspring Chiropractic and Acupuncture and The Refinery Salon Studios.  After years of planning and hard work, our joint business operation is now open, housing both businesses in one building.  We invite our customers to experience the convenience of receiving multiple services in one location.

Please Note:  Although we have an established patient base, Wellspring welcomes new patients to experience our highly rated services.  We are currently accepting new patients.

SERVICES

CHIROPRACTIC

Chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT) is an extremely effective treatment procedure whereby the joints of the spine or extremities are "adjusted" or manipulated to provide pain relief by increasing joint range of motion and stimulating internal joint and muscle receptors.  Scientific evidence suggests that manipulating spinal joints is the preferred method of treatment for managing conditions such as low back and neck pain, and is considerably less expensive than traditional medical treatment.  In our practice, we have successfully treated thousands of patients both safely and effectively with chiropractic care.  Remember, chiropractic manipulation can ONLY be delivered by a licensed chiropractor.  You should NEVER let an untrained health professional or other person try to "mimic" chiropractic manipulation.  CMT is highly specific and requires a Doctor of Chiropractic for its safe and successful administration.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in human and animal medicine to provide relief for many conditions.  It is the practice of inserting very fine needles into areas that are rich in nerve and blood supply to affect changes in the body.  While the ancient wisdom of acupuncture can be considered an art, modern science has been interpreting the success experienced by patients.  This has resulted in a more neurologic and anatomical based approach to acupuncture.

Acupuncture helps the body heal itself.  Although the exact mechanism of how acupuncture works is not yet understood, research has shown it works primarily through the nervous system.  As nerve fibers are stimulated by the tiny needles, neurochemicals are produced and released into the surrounding tissues.  These chemicals travel to the central nervous system resulting in a cascade of feedback mechanisms.  Because the nervous system is an extensive network affecting every other system in the body, the effects of acupuncture extend well beyond the needle insertion sites.

One of the most commonly asked questions about acupuncture is "does it hurt?"  The simple answer is, no, not usually.  Some patients report feeling a slight "prick" as the needle is inserted, while other times nothing is felt at all.  Unlike hypodermic needles that are large and "slice" through the tissue, acupuncture needles are solid and separate the cells as they are inserted.  The result is very minimal pain or no pain at all.

We have been practicing acupuncture since 2008.  It has become an integral part of the treatment protocol for over half of the patients that are currently seen in the clinic.

TRIGGER POINT DRY NEEDLING

Trigger points develop in the body a result of repetitive stress and tension and feel like hard knots in the muscle tissue.  Active trigger points are very painful and can refer pain to other parts of the body.  Trigger point dry needling is much like acupuncture in that very thin needles are inserted directly into the trigger point.  The difference, however, is that with trigger point dry needling, the needle is "pistoned" or inserted and slightly withdrawn several times.  The goal is to stimulate a fasciculation or release in the trigger point.  Once a trigger point is released by dry needling, the patient typically expresses immediate relief and reduction of pain symptoms.

GUA SHA or IASTM (INSTRUMENT ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION)

Gua Sha is an instrument assisted soft tissue technique that we regularly use in the clinic for particularly stubborn cases of tight or ropey muscles.  When regular manual therapy isn't achieving maximum results, typically Gua Sha is the treatment of choice.  With Gua Sha, a special oil is used to lubricate the skin, then, a specific tool is used with varying degrees of pressure to release the soft tissue adhesions, trigger points, and ropey texture.  The technique is performed only by the doctor.  The "Gua" is an ancient term used to describe the act working the tissue, while "Sha" describes the namesake redness of the skin (a temporary surface bruising called petechiae) which signifies the release of energy and that a successful treatment has been completed.  Physiologically, all IASTM treatments are the same, but different and sometimes patented tools allow for naming rights and trademarks to be used, such as with Graston (tm) or ASTYM (tm) therapies.

HYPERVOLT PERCUSSION

Percussion therapy is excellent for helping to release tight muscle fibers and to increase circulation.  After intense workouts, there is some evidence it helps with recovery by limiting delayed onset muscle soreness.  In the clinic setting, we use our Hypervolt Pro on most every visit to help relax and release soft tissues prior to the chiropractic adjustment.

KINESIO TAPING

Kinesio taping is the practice of using elastic support tape over an injured joint for support and to facilitate healing.  Kinesio tape can also be used over areas that aren't injured (but that may be prone to injury) to add a layer of support to the joint complex.  Kineso tape has gained much popularity among elite athletes because they recognize the performance benefits taping can have.  In our clinic, we regularly use kinesio tape for shoulder and knee injuries where pain prevents full range of motion or normal activity.  We've also successfully used kinesio tape with many other conditions.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

High quality nutritional supplements have become virtually a necessity for any patient looking to feel better, avoid sickness, and add a nutritional support foundation to their lifestyle.  We carry brands that can only be purchased with a medical license, thereby assuring you that you are getting the highest quality supplement available on the market today.  A word of caution:  stay away from store brands!  Commonly, cheap vitamins are filled with synthetic components and binders and offer no where near the benefit touted on their package.  Because this industry is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, claims are often overstated or flat out false.  We offer high quality, independent party tested products from NutriDyn, Orthomolecular Products, Thorne, and Nordic Naturals.
